Language creates identity. Words form and shape who we are. This is one of the main reasons I think that words are so powerful: they either give life or death. Build up or tear down.
You can see this in both the Bible and in daily life. God spoke in the beginning and created with the power of His words. Speaking He created something out of nothing. Wow! Then God breathed the breath of life into Adam and Adam came to life. Jesus came and spoke the very words of God. When Jesus died, rose again and left earth He said He would send a helper for us: the Holy Spirit. Now, the Holy Spirit speaks words to us. So God speaks TO us, AT us, WITH us, OVER us and IN and THROUGH us. He speaks identity over us. He tells us who we really are. And who we are in the most foundational sense is image-bearers of God.
God made us in His image. That’s our identity to the core of who we are. God made us and everything, He gets to decide who we are and what defines us.
Today whether we’re working, playing, resting, creating or sleeping our words and language is either building or tearing down.
Language and words create or destroy. What words are you listening to? Whose words do you hear? What words are shaping your identity? When you speak to and over others in your life, what identity are you helping form in them? Yes it’s true, words form our identity. They either tell us the truth about who we are or they lie to us in a very deceitful and subtle way.
The stories we listen to, tell ourselves are the ones that we most believe are true.
So choose your words wisely. Speak truth over yourself and others. Build up. Create. Speak life. Find your hope and identity-formation in the words God speaks.
